Neonatal cholestasis is defined as prolonged conjugated hyperbilirubinemia that
occurs in the newborn period. Cholestasis is derived from the Latin words; chole
means bile and stasis means still as it results from a diminished bile flow and/or
excretion of conjugated bilirubin from the hepatocyte into the duodenum (Hwang &
Shulman, 2002).
