Agriculture, a profession in India which is not only means of livelihood for majority of
population but also way of life. India is endowed with 127 agro–climatic regions which
show the richness of country in terms of climatic variability and it ensures the possibilities
of growing various kinds of crops in the country. The total geographical area of the
country is 328.7 million hectare, of which 141.6 million hectare is net sown area.The agriculture
and allied sector contributed approximately 13.94 per cent of India′s GDP during
2013–14 (Anonymous, 2014 ). Whereas, at the national level, 57.8 per cent of rural d
households are now engaged in agriculture and allied activities (Sharma, 2015). It clearly
indicates that agriculture is the backbone of Indian economy.
