Book Overview

Women in reproductive age 15-49 years, representing 26 per cent in the world population (2002) constitute the single-most vulnerable group in terms of health care. India accounts for almost 25 per cent of world's maternal deaths and the proportion of deaths due to pregnancy related causes in rural areas is still the highest (World Bank, 1998). There is an excess of maternal morbidity and mortality resulting from physical assault as well as certain hazards associated with their agricultural and industrial work (WHO, 1998). It is recognized that women's health problems are linked to their inferior social, economic and political status.
